Basic Concepts in Competitive Smash

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3 Sessions 1.5 hours $15

You’re ready to step into competitive Smash. Or, you’ve taken your first steps, and you want to touch upon some of the basic concepts to refine your core. This set of lessons is designed to teach the facets that are a big part of competitive Smash, and how a player can weather through all of it. This plan will not take place all in one day. Rather, I like to arrange a schedule that will work out for both me and the student. This may result in the training plan taking over the course of a couple days, but this also gives me the opportunity to overlook your progress from lesson to lesson, and give the student the time to reflect upon the teachings in time for the next lesson.

Sessions Overview

The Start of the Match

30 minutes

Now that you’re in, and the game has started, what do you do? There’s a lot to talk about, and it depends on the kind of player you are, along with what character you prefer using. This lesson showcases some things to keep in mind, and develop into your core fundamentals. This lesson includes: -Basic approach options and when to use them. -Combo starters. -Basic defense options and when to use them. -Taking the stock effectively.

Archetypes

30 minutes

Now that you’re a bit more familiarized with how a game of competitive Smash plays out, it’s a great time to understand some of the inner workings of the game, and a good place to start is by getting used to archetypes, what they do, and what their weaknesses are. This lesson includes: -What is a Brawler. -What is a Rushdown. -What is a Spacer. -What is a Zoner.

Introduction to Neutral

30 minutes

And now we touch upon arguably the most important aspect of competitive Smash: neutral. Neutral itself is a complicated and not so straightforward concept, so this lesson is designed to teach the idea behind it in an eloquent way that can be applied to further teachings and be developed through experience. This lesson will include: -What is neutral. -How do you “win” neutral. -How to be safe in neutral. -What to do after losing neutral.
