Essentials of Steve (Main OR Counterplay)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
10 Sessions 10 hours $200

Steve is one of Smash Ultimate's most notorious characters for a number of reasons. If you're looking to pick up the character yourself, or if you want a deep dive into learning how to beat him, this training plan is for you! This plan covers every important aspect of understanding Steve, whether it's about his blocks, minecart, his resource management, or his incredibly vast amount of weird tech he can seemingly just pull out of nowhere.

Sessions Overview

Steve's Obscure Moves and Their Applications

1 hour

In this session, we will look at Steve's down tilt, anvil, minecart, sfair/sbair, TNT, and elytra. Each of these moves generally have their own learning curve and aren't the most naturally intuitive to figure out. By the end of this session, players will understand the functionality of these moves and will learn multiple strings/setups in order to secure stocks or increased damage.

General Moveset and Utility

1 hour

This opening module will explain the majority of Steve's moves and how they function as well as what their general purposes are. This opening session also allows me to better see what your understanding of both the character and the game is like, allowing for the following sessions to be more curated towards you specifically.

Stage Materials and Mining Cycles, and How To Maximize on Their Use

1 hour

Now that we understand how blocks work, we'll go over what materials appear on what stages, how to most effectively reach gold and diamond, and how to manipulate the resources in your bar in order to achieve various goals.

Bread and Butter Combos and General Advantage State

1 hour

If there's anything that makes Steve a strong character aside from his ability to keep people away, it's the reward he gets from a single hit. This session will allow players to learn how to maximize reward off of different hits with different tools, and teach various steve combos such as pick loops, axe ladders, and several other matchup-specific setups.

Navigating Disadvantage

1 hour

Steve's disadvantage at a base level is one of the easier parts of learning him, so this session will show you various ways to mix up your options when trying to reset the game to neutral or find a good spot to mine/attack.

WHAT IS NEUTRAL???

1 hour

Neutral is a hard enough concept to understand as is, but it's even more difficult to wrap your head around when Steve's blocks are involved. This session will give you a starting view on how to not only play neutral with Steve's base kit, but on how to conceptually skew the favor of risk/reward your way for each opener. (Steve is very good at this lol)

Cyel's Steve Tech Locker

1 hour

This module is exactly as it sounds. I have a list of Steve tech I keep on my computer, and in this hour I will show you everything on it, how to perform these actions, and what their applications are.

Conclusion

1 hour

This last session essentially serves as an average 1 hour wifi session, where we get games in an arena for a bit in order to see where you're currently most lacking and highlight where you do well, as well as discuss what the next course of action is to allow you to continue learning Steve at a quick pace, whether it continues to be with me or it's on your own time.

Blocks and Their Applications

1 hour

Steve's blocks are the most important part of his kit, so naturally, having a module specifically about building is vital for learning the character. This module will teach players different build methods for survival and keeping the opponent out, how to NIL (heights 1, 2, and 3), what the block strengths are, how to build offstage, and several other setups.

Common Steve Habits and Alternate Options

1 hour

Steve is a character notorious for having a playerbase which repeats the same patterns of moves over and over. This session will show you video examples of various Steve patterns being punished, where we will then play in an arena in order to show you various alternative solutions to common problems Steve may encounter, such as recovering from high positions to ledge, being stuck in shield at ledge, and landing with low resources. Think of this session as a followup to navigating disadvantage, but giving you warning signs in order to prevent early habits from forming. We will also cover common patterns in which Steve players like to approach, and talk about how to make said approaches more ambiguous.
