Make it Out of Pools Training Plan

This plan is meant for someone who is serious about improving in competition, and wants a path to make the jump to exiting pool play at large offline/online events, a major hurdle for budding competitive fighting game players. In this plan, we will asses your current skill level, see what to improve on, discuss the current tournament space in detail, and prepare/improve your match up strategy.

Sessions Overview

Replay Review and Assessment

1 hour

Initial serious replay review. Here we will confirm where you are at skill wise in order to set reasonable goals, and identify your strengths and weaknesses along with initial action steps.

Introduction

1 hour

We'll begin by sitting down and assessing where you're at by looking at your character and how you feel about match ups currently, and how you feel about competition in general.

Review of Tournament 1

1 hour

We will review your initial tournament performance since starting together. Not only looking at the sets you played (we will use as much time as required, don't worry), but talking about the event as an experience on its own. We will again conclude with action steps for you to work on.

Review of Action Steps

1 hour

Here we will see how much you've improved after an initial session. From here the focus will be on individual match ups, as we identify your strong match ups, weak match ups, and how to prioritize what characters to play against. At this point testing yourself at an online event is recommended.

Review of Tournament 2

1 hour

We will review your tournament performance. Not only looking at the sets you played (we will use as much time as required, don't worry), but talking about the event as an experience on its own. We will again conclude with action steps for you to work on.

Review of Tournament 3

1 hour

After playing one more event (ideally the large one we planned for), we will review your progress one final time. It can be hard to record matches offline, so either take notes or ideally have a friend record them if possible. If online, you may need to record them on your own depending on what mode you decide to play your opponent on.

Review of Action Steps

1 hour

Here we will see how much you've improved after the initial tournament run. We will continue to focus on individual match ups, as we identify your strong match ups, weak match ups, and how to prioritize what characters to play against. Ideally you will compete again after this session.

Review of Action Steps 2

1 hour

We will review your progress via replays since the second online tournament. At this point, you should start looking for a larger event, either regional or major, offline or online. We will discuss best practices for preparing, as well as some discussion about offline events (if that is where you're going. For this, we will take as long as needed).
